ABSTRACT

Farmers are commonly assumed to be male in most parts of the world. This image, however, does not correspond with agrarian realities. Within smallholder households, women usually

play crucial roles in food processing as well as in domestic labour and caring work. Women work to raise crops for consumption and for sale, and in associated small livestock husbandry. The global trend is for women to take increased responsibility within agricultural production (FAO, 2005).
