ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the use of self-disclosure in forensic (e.g., correctional and secure hospital) settings. Self-disclosure may be carefully utilized as a clinical tool in these environments, though also risks veering into the realm of boundary violation. In forensic settings, where patients/inmates may live in locked facilities for years and have often committed serious acts of violence, the risks and benefits of disclosing must be considered even more carefully. Therapists in forensic settings are advised to engage in regular supervision, remain vigilant about putting patients’ needs above their own, and consider safety factors thoroughly before self-disclosing. This chapter explores the unique environment, boundaries, and risks and benefits of self-disclosure in forensic settings, and with case examples that illustrate key points of this chapter.
