ABSTRACT

Live performance provides an experience that cannot be matched by listening to recorded music in the classroom. The Sydney Symphony Orchestra has devised a program of concerts specifically for children in the first three years of school. The performances are designed to be developmentally appropriate for children aged from five to eight years. This paper outlines the innovate nature of the concerts that feature children as a participatory audience. The selection of repertoire and the types of support and resources provided for teachers are also discussed.
