ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the history of classification schemes for anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa and then critically evaluates the current diagnostic criteria for both of these disorders with special attention to potential points of controversy. Based on this evaluation, specific recommendations are made for revision to the DSM-III-R (American Psychiatric Association [APA], 1987) diagnostic criteria for the eating disorders. Finally, the range of assessment strategies for measuring eating disorder symptoms, as well as those for determining a diagnosis, are presented.
