ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the establishment and development of a death education project at St Christopher’s Hospice, London. It provides some background information about St Christopher’s Hospice and the current challenges that face both the organisation and end of life care in general. The responsibility that all hospices and end of life care providers have for promoting healthier attitudes towards their work, enabling society to shift its view of both death and dying is emphasised. The history of the St Christopher’s Schools Project is presented together with a detailed project plan. Following this, material from a number of projects undertaken with different schools and colleges is discussed. Results from the project evaluation study are given before conclusions are drawn and new public education initiatives at St Christopher’s Hospice are considered.
