ABSTRACT

Homeless youth have received little attention in the higher education literature. One notable exception is Lauralee Summer’s autobiography Learning Joy from Dogs without Collars (2003). Th e book traces Summer’s life as a homeless youth, with her mother, through her graduation from Harvard in 1998. Her story demonstrates the role that resiliency and social support play in assisting homeless youth’s transition through adolescence and into adulthood. Although not an academic study, Summer’s autobiography reveals how one homeless student navigated her way through the various obstacles to attain a college education.
