ABSTRACT

The US Army was nearly destroyed as an effective fighting force by the Vietnam War. It would take nearly two decades for the Army to reform itself into the force that performed so magnificently in the hundred-hour First Gulf War. This reformation included changes in doctrine, organization, recruitment, and technology. The Army was transformed into a modern force trained and equipped to prevail on the conventional battlefield. However, this transformation had some unintended effects as well, which caused difficulties for the Army when it was confronted with different kinds of conflict in Iraq and Afghanistan.
