ABSTRACT

On the morning of 6 May 2000 a crowd began gathering in the city of Chiang Mai in the north of Thailand. The crowd consisted of farmers, villagers, people’s organisations, environmentalists, trade unionists, human rights activists, students and representatives of national and international non-government organisations. Shared concern about environmental preservation, management of resources and the living conditions of the many subject to poverty in the developing world catalysed the group’s formation.
