Civil–military cooperation and human security

Since the end of the Cold War, violent intra-state conflicts have overshadowed traditional wars between states. Some military analysts within the United States now refer to these modern day conflicts as “fourth generation” wars. According to these analysts, Fourth Generation wars are an indication of “the greatest dialectically qualitative change in the conduct of war since the Peace of Westphalia that ended the Thirty Years War in 1648.”
