ABSTRACT

In this section of the Reader we shall look at the text of the Sotah, the biblical I prescription for a woman who may have committed adultery. One uses the conditional may because if there had been witnesses to the act of adultery, both the adulteress woman and her adulteress partner would have been put to death, according to the laws in Deuteronomy. “If a man is caught lying with the wife of another man, both of them shall die, the man who lay with the woman as well as the woman” (Deut. 22:22).
