The training of museum staff seems to be a perennial issue of debate and discord in many countries. Six years after the major Hale Report on the question in Britain, training has become more clouded and controversial than ever. Alf Hatton in this chapter, first published in 1989, questions how far new training initiatives in themselves can offer solutions to the lack of equal opportunities in museum employment and provision.
