ABSTRACT

A set of rules for handling works of art is only one of the ingredients necessary to ensure their safe movement within the museum. Demonstrations of correct techniques (preferably demonstrations in which staff can participate) are absolutely essential supplements to the printed word. Good equipment, in good working order, is another must. All the care in the world will not make a truck with a sticky wheel into a safe vehicle for the transport of paintings. Another necessity is a supervisory staff capable of adapting rules to unusual circumstances and of adjusting to emergencies of every sort. The most important requirement of all is a handling crew that work well together, are totally familiar with the correct procedures, and possess the ability to work in a careful and methodical manner. This is, perhaps, a tall order, but one deserving of the best efforts of all responsible institutions.
