ABSTRACT

As I prepared for the beginning of the school year, I pondered the ways in which I could better prepare my pre-service teachers to meet the needs of the diverse students in the public schools. Of course, my twenty years of experience as a teacher, supervisor, and administrator in the public schools and my seven years of experience as a teacher educator informed my process. Indeed, as a teacher I had worked in the most diverse school in an inner city school district which fit well with my background and experiences as an Asian-American. In this new year, I wanted to explore the ways in which my Asian-American heritage influenced my work with students to foster equitable and humane environments within their future classrooms. I wanted to discover in what ways, if any, my cultural background affected my teaching.
