ABSTRACT

The Indian poet and linguist Ramanujan (1990) once posed the question: Is there an Indian way of thinking? He went on to show how, depending where the stress is placed, this question contained many questions. If approached in the same way, my question, Is there a Japanese way of playing? reveals many of the issues and complexities lying behind the topic ‘Japan at Play’. The different emphases are as follows:

1 Is there a Japanese way of playing? 2 Is there a Japanese way of playing? 3 Is there a Japanese way of playing? 4 Is there a Japanese way of playing? 5 Is there a Japanese way of playing?
