ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the use of sport as a tool to support the education of girls and women by providing an overview of programmes that have sought to use sport as an educational platform for girls and women. The first part of the chapter outlines a selection of programs, detailing their format and their intended outcomes. This section considers educational programmes within both High Income Countries (HICs) and LMICs and examines some of the diverse focuses of initiatives across different contexts. The chapter then moves on to consider some of the critiques of education delivered through sport, before discussing practical actions and recommendations. The chapter concludes with a case study that illustrates the application of sport by a Non-Government Organisation (NGO) in Zambia to support the education of girls and women.
