ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the impacts of mega-events, which increasingly take place in countries of the Global South. In socio-spatially fragmented host cities, these spectacles encompass extremely transformative urban processes. By focusing upon the festivalization of Rio de Janeiro in the preparatory phase of the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2016 Summer Olympics, this chapter will illustrate how urban policies contributed to the ‘invisibilization’ and ‘touristic staging’ of favelas against the backdrop of the global tourism.
