ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the importance of determining travel patterns of recreationists. After reviewing a variety of methods for analyzing recreational flows, Bryan Thompson utilizes the traditional method of the gravity model to determine the propensity of campers in Ontario to travel to certain parks within the province. The chapter examines the methods that have been used for analyzing patterns of recreational travel and to conducts a pilot study to examine the flow of campers to a sample of Ontario provincial parks. One form of outdoor recreation is camping, and this increase in recreational traffic flow has brought with it a commensurate increase in the demand for camping facilities. The chapter explores one form of recreational travel, that of campers to Ontario provincial parks, and to develop an exploratory and simplified model for simulating the flow of campers between the major centers of population and a sample of Ontario parks.
