ABSTRACT

In Mozambique, there has always been great curiosity for colonial cinema for reasons that date back to before independence: movies were shown that a person did not watch in Portugal, for example. There is no intention of creating supporting environment for the development of local filmmaking. Basically, the cinema law is also a copy of Portuguese one that, however, operates in a different context with a different availability of public funding and different benchmarks. Therefore, the law is kind of a wish list that has no root in the local reality. It is absurd because the Institution does not provide funding and such decisions show that it does not know how movie is made, especially since changes continue to be made all through the shooting. There are three names to watch: one doing fiction and two doing documentaries. They were educated, but the truth is that it is a global culture now and so youth start looking for training opportunities abroad.
