ABSTRACT

India’s achievements in adapting and implementing a variety of science-based technologies have been notable. India was the first country outside the industrialized world to design and construct a general purpose satellite, INSAT-2, which was orbited by a US launcher in 1982 and has both remote sensing and communications capabilities. Significant achievements have also been made in the field of nuclear technology. Although less spectacular than its advances in space and nuclear technology, India’s achievements in applied agricultural science and medicine, particularly preventive medicine and health-care delivery, have no doubt had a more profound and widespread effect. The central government dominates Indian science and technology to a far greater extent than in the United States or most industrialized countries, playing several distinct though related roles. Promotional measures designed to improve the access of this sector to modern technology, supply of inputs, credit and risk capital would help to enhance its productivity and competitiveness.
