ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the structure of research and development (R&D) in India and the different expectations from it. It discusses the history of intellectual property protection in India and its impact on the management of these R&D units. The chapter explores the changing role of India within the international supply of technology and knowledge and the new importance of intellectual property. There are a number of studies on the relationship between intellectual property rights and R&D including the innovative activities of firms. Intellectual property rights issues are also being reintroduced into the national debate and the government is showing some signs of willingness to reopen the issue of providing a tighter intellectual property rights regime in science and technology. Intellectual property rights are governed by a number of mechanisms in India. Existing laws protecting intellectual property may prove highly inadequate in negotiating such deals.
