ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the transformative characteristics and development impacts of temporary transnational migration in Turkey using interviews with both migrants and experts. The most important aspects relevant to the case of Turkey can be summarised as nationalist bureaucratic procedures, the geographical limitation in the politico-legal context; challenges of applying for and acquiring work permits, poor working conditions and high engagement in the informal sector regarding the socio-economic context; and social cohesion and language barriers in the socio-cultural context. Our analysis emphasises the need for systematic changes that would transform the present situation in the direction of more sustainable and durable outcomes.
