ABSTRACT

There are several reasons for the considerable attention being given to women teachers in the primary schools. Women have been steadily entering the teaching profession in growing numbers in the post-war period. As in many other countries, the pattern of entry for women into the professions begins at the lowest levels and men gradually spreads upward to the higher levels. Reflecting societal values in the educational system itself helped to perpetuate the notion that women were best suited for teaching the lower grades in elementary school. Above the elementary level, men and women were educated separately. After women marry, they will bear children. As mothers, it is their duty to care for their children. However, should a woman enter the teaching profession, it would interfere with her responsibilities to her children, which are of foremost importance.
