ABSTRACT

This chapter explores what a feminist war game might look like through a game jam post-mortem. To contextualize this game jam reflection, this chapter addresses the historical connections between war and gaming, the difficulty of finding inspiration for a feminist or alternative approach to war, and the importance of providing feminist spaces as well as feminist themes for collaborative game design. While figuring out exactly what a feminist war game could be is a challenge, this chapter demonstrates that the process of making an overtly feminist game is part of an ongoing ‘culture war’ in which feminist scholars, critics, players, and developers are fighting to make game production, game culture, and game studies more accessible, inclusive, and fair for everyone.
