ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at a different type of computer and its potential to sound and music design, within the context of ubimus and the resurgence of analogue audio processing. It traces in detail the relationship between the general-purpose analogue computer and the music instrument technology of voltage control. The chapter explores the principles of analogue computation with electronic computers. It examines the possibilities of general-purpose electronic computers as musical instruments, followed by an examination of the current state of the art in the area. The chapter also discusses the new perspectives for ubimus research and practice in the context of analogue computing. Analogue computers operate under different principles to their digital stored-program counterparts. The capabilities of a given analogue computer are determined by the types of computing blocks it can offer, and how they can be connected in a program.
