ABSTRACT

Recently introduced strategy for Norwegian school development requires development from below, whereby teachers, school leaders and municipalities – in cooperation with researchers from teacher education – define areas for improvement and establish professional learning communities for school-based competence development (Ministry of Education and Research, 2017). In the study reported on in this chapter, the focus was on Lesson Study (LS) and how this method for learning and development can contribute to teachers’ learning and to the development of professional learning communities that enhance school-based development. School-based development involves learning for all parties in school. The purpose of this chapter is to show how cultural-historical activity theory (CHAT) gives structure and tools for professional learning in a school-based development with LS as a method for professional learning and development for all participants.
