ABSTRACT

There comes a time when our wants and our needs become confused and the consequences of our actions ripple beyond our immediate environment. In this inquiry, students use digital tools to examine primary and secondary sources related to the intersections of consumerism, human rights, and sustainability to answer the question, “To what extent can human rights and a free market coexist in a global economy?” Students reflect on how geography and politics come together and the actions people, corporations, and other institutions engage in to protect their interests and/or the interests of others (including a future-oriented perspective). How this information informs civic action on a local and global scale is addressed.
