ABSTRACT

In today’s world, many people are suffering from poverty, violence, war, oppression, discrimination and exclusion, and the breakup of families. Moreover, people are confronted with different kinds of crises and challenges, from individualism, materialism, and consumerism to indifference and division, much of which are caused to a certain extent by insecurity and fears. In the Roman Catholic tradition, Scriptures, the Catechism, and Catholic Social Teachings play an important role in guiding believers so that they can lead a life of human flourishing and respond to the moral needs of society. While many Christians do learn about these teachings, they are not moved deeply enough to bring about transformation to themselves and society. With Confucian teachings being explicit about forming virtuous persons, quite a number of scholars emphasize the virtuous aspect of Confucianism and claim that virtue ethics is the implicit theory behind Confucian ethics.
