ABSTRACT

In January 1883, Browning wrote to his friend Furnivall announcing the imminent publication of a new collection of poems. It was to be ‘a collection of things gravish and gayish – hence the title Jocoseria’ (Hood, p. 213). 19 The volume was a slim one, containing only ten poems, one of which (presumably a ‘gravish’ one) was ‘Mary Wollstonecraft and Fuseli’.
