ABSTRACT

In a Norwegian kindergarten with a strong outdoor education practice, children were invited to take photographs of things that interested them. The vignette reports on four children and two preservice kindergarten teachers and their interactions related to two of the photographs that were taken. Two of Bishop’s universal activities – explaining and locating – are highlighted in the first commentary in a detailed explanation of the children’s actions with the photographs as they explore them as representations of the outdoor space they have photographed. Written by a preservice kindergarten teacher involved in the photography session, the second commentary provides detailed observations of the children’s action and thinking, as well as many ideas about what might happen next as a result of the reported investigation. Writing from a Greek/English background, the third commentator notes how the children in the vignette are driven by their own ideas, interests, and artefacts to explore and negotiate their thoughts and underpinning mathematical notions.
