ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the importance of the relationship between the midwife and other professionals in the context of perinatal mental health and associated decision-making. It discusses the woman’s journey through maternity care and the essential function of screening and detection will be explored alongside critical decision-making in relation to high-risk groups. This chapter utilizes a clinical case study approach to highlight other pertinent aspects of decision-making, including the need for psychiatric birth planning and the challenges that mothers face when making decisions about medication when pregnant and breastfeeding. Women with mental health problems frequently have a number of issues in their lives which impact upon their interaction, uptake and decision-making about their health. The internet is an easy to access resource for patients wishing to access health information and has become widely used. In addition, patients may not have the required information technology skills that are required to access the resources.
