ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the concept of empathy from the perspective of Intersubjective Self Psychology (ISP). First, empathy is described using Kohut’s theory of Self Psychology. Next the chapter looks at empathy through the lens of Intersubjectivity. Finally, it explores the concept and utility of empathy as it has evolved in the unified theory of ISP, that is, how the concept of empathy is enhanced when looked at from within a fully engaged and intertwined two-person system. Finally, a case is presented illustrating empathy from the perspective of ISP.
