ABSTRACT

This chapter provides information that may help the less experienced in presenting evidence in court. The role of the expert witness is to assist the court in answering the ultimate question by providing an objective opinion based on knowledge and experience. Arriving at court with time to spare is good practice, but requires some careful planning. The purpose of the adversarial system is to test the resilience and credibility of the evidence presented, but this inevitably includes testing the resilience and credibility of the witness as well. Still images taken from video footage have an important role in casework. They can be used to help identify the figure and subject in question, or demonstrate the location of a piece of footage. They may be a necessary way of demonstrating an aspect of a feature of gait.
