ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to key principles of report writing, the general contents of a report, the legal requirements of reports, processes for the verification and submission of the report and potential pitfalls to avoid in report production. Forensic experts may be required to produce technical reports, provide written advice which assists an investigation, and usually later, a factual or evidential report or statement. In fact, in legal terms, they serve the same purpose in that they all assist the triers of fact in reaching a decision. Failing to do so may lead to a report not being accepted and the evidence contained not being useable in the case. An expert’s report is required when the expert will be either, via the report or in person, presenting evidence of opinion in court. The layout of the report should clearly define each section, be easy to navigate and have a logical order.
