ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book examines overt and covert forms of slave resistance in Brazil at different times in its postcolonial history. It also examines resistance by the Rastafari movement through the lens of spirituality. The book provides an analysis of the critical role of Black resistance in accomplishing political independence in Trinidad and Tobago, and the country's struggle to maintain racial equality in the republic, where Black resistance stimulated its independence from British rule on August 31, 1962. It analyzes the contributions of Bob Marley and Fela Kuti to the radical Black music tradition. The book presents impact of visual street art that includes the mural 'Paz para la Mujer,' which is located in San Juan, Puerto Rico's capital, and was created by Colectivo Morivivi, a group of Afro-Puerto Rican women.
