ABSTRACT

Transgender and nonbinary (TNB) young people seek mental health and gender support for myriad reasons including gaining access to gender-affirming treatments, exploring their own understanding of identity, seeking support and information for families, and to address specific types of dysphoria or other symptoms of mental health distress. This chapter examines the role of affirming and inclusive mental health and gender care in the lives of TNB young people up to the age of 18. This chapter explores the complex role of mental health providers in the position of providing gender-affirming care. It addresses the state of care, and need for modification of evidence-based interventions, considers gaps in training and research, and supports ethical, intersectional, and culturally-responsive mental health and gender care for TNB youth and their families.
