ABSTRACT

Many academics work in an environment which is fundamentally different to the one they themselves experienced as students. However, whilst some studies have documented negative academic consequences of part-time, term-time employment ranging from missed lectures and tutorials to reduced time for academic study and fatigue, others have highlighted various benefits. Only one student interviewed said he had talked to members of the academic staff about the effects he felt his part-time job was having on his studies. Several respondents wanted extra support for their studies from the academic staff. Several students reported a lack of communication between the academic staff and students in relation to the demands placed on students outside lectures and this was interpreted by several respondents as a lack of interest in the student situation on the part of the academic staff.
