ABSTRACT
This essay is in two parts. Part A of the essay traces the beginnings of translation from English academic texts into Urdu in the erstwhile State of Hyderabad. This activity was at the peak during the founding years of Osmania University, whose medium of ‘expression’ was Urdu in the beginning. Part B of the essay maps the literary translations focusing on the translation of English poetry into Urdu by famous Urdu poets from across India. The offshoot of these translations is the introduction of new forms like the stanza and free verse in Urdu poetry. Further research could focus on translations of English drama and fiction and its impact on Urdu Literature.
