ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses the relationship between households and homeownership under conditions of financialization. Through the case of Ciudad Valdeluz, a Spanish residential project connected to the development of a high-speed rail network, I discuss the ways in which homeownership contributes to the strengthening of the normative nuclear family household. I trace the ideological persistence of the “normal” nuclear family household to the specific articulation of the relationship between use value and exchange value in the housing market. Overall, the case of Valdeluz suggests that the social relations of homeownership and their rearticulation under conditions of economic crisis provide an uncertain starting point for a progressive politics.
