ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a discussion of the new design sensibilities required for things comprised of, and residing within, a world of Atoms and Bits. It also presents a case study of a novel hybrid thing/service termed the 'Physical Playlist'. Overall it is important to note that if users are to function within a complex social and technological world of Atoms and Bits, they will need to be able to develop the mental models of what things mean or how they operate. The discussion on affordances, cultural conventions and signifies drew extensively on notions of perception, and the chapter is concerned with the associated term of sensation. The chapter considers the challenges for designers in creating meaningful interactions in a world that is increasingly constructed of both Atoms and Bits as one continue to add layers of code atop our physical world.
