ABSTRACT
In this chapter, we focus on methodologies and data bases that L2 pragmatic researchers can employ in investigating pragmatics in English as an International Language (EIL). The chapter begins by an overview of prior and current methodological approaches to L2 pragmatics, in each case synthesizing unique contributions and challenges in investigating pragmatics in EIL. Of them, we focus on how the theoretical and methodological strengths of conversation analysis and corpus linguistics can complement each other in strengthening research of pragmatics in EIL. We survey existing research on pragmatics in EIL that employs conversation analysis and corpus linguistics along with the appraisal of current methodological practices. In addition, empirical research based on EIL corpora is reviewed for empirical evidence of EIL interactions and lexico-grammatical patterns. The chapter ends with concrete suggestions on how to advance the current methodological practices of pragmatics in EIL for future research directions.
