ABSTRACT

Gopal Krishna Gokhale was one of the great Indian nationalists who worked for India’s freedom at a time when there was unrest in social and political milieu. He was one of the earliest protagonists of liberal values in colonial India and relied heavily on his persuasive method and constitutionalism. He represented the moderate school of the Indian National Congress (I.N.C.). His adoption of moderate politics and clinging to constitutionalism introduced a new method of struggle. He is considered the political guru of Mahatma Gandhi. The purpose of this chapter is to highlight Gokhale’s life, political career, and political activities and techniques along with his views on constitutional reforms, social regeneration, and ethics and politics.
