ABSTRACT

In the middle of the school year, a pandemic hit the United Sates, forcing faculty, staff, and students to pivot from traditional face-to-face instruction to distance learning. This presented a variety of challenges to them as well as others involved in education (e.g., parents and family members) at all levels of education. The community college population is a diverse group in terms of ethnicity, age, access to resources, etc. This chapter contains the stories of two faculty members, one student, and one student/staff member that provide a window into the experiences of those within the community college system. They reveal the challenges of transitioning over a short period and the unexpected outcomes, lack of work-life balance, and uncertainty of the situation. Additionally, they showcase opportunities for growth and bright spots, including meaningful impacts on students and finding the strength to draw on unknown reserves to improve educational experiences.
