ABSTRACT

Following the death of Kapellmeister Heinichen in 1729 Zelenka took over most of the musical duties in the Catholic court church without ever receiving a title that would have reflected the musical duties he carried out. Although the music was described in 1735 as being splendid, it is not known who composed the mass for the event held on the feast of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin. Trumpets and timpani were present in the cathedral and at that time the small chamber ensemble of the Saxon Prime Minister Count Brühl was resident in Warsaw. Two Catholic pageboys of equal size (Karczewski and Swinarski) were present to hold wax torches. Although members of the Hofkapelle had visited Moritzburg for musical performances earlier in July, it seems that they had not been called to provide the music on this occasion.
