ABSTRACT

On the French railways, a continuous daytime driving period of seven hours is possible. Such long driving times, the question arises of the fatigue felt by the drivers. This paper describes the methodology and gives a part of the results obtained during the Paris-Nice line (6 hours 40 minutes of driving). Results are focused on the psychological and behavioural aspects of the high speed driving task. The subjective evaluation does not show a feeling of fatigue expressed by the train drivers. On the other hand the behavioural adjustments observed indicate that the task indeed took its toll. It is the train driver expertise which makes these adjustments possible.
