ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to discuss a selection of Second World War heritage sites located in Finnish Lapland from an ecological and multispecies perspective. The cultural heritage status of Second World War sites in Finland has remained somewhat undetermined due to lack of official recognition and ownership. These are also vulnerable sites that are occasionally looted. In Finland, free dance, having its basis in German expressionist dance, was considered representative of National Socialist ideologies and therefore despised after the war had ended. Elsa Puolanne was one of the first Finnish dancers to adopt a dance style conceptualised as the German ausdruckstanz. In her formative years, Elsa studied with many German teachers, and the dance style she adopted has later been interpreted as entangled with National Socialism. After the Second World War ended, the contribution of Elsa Puolanne and her contemporaries to the Finnish dance art was considered unprofessional.
