ABSTRACT

Whilst for some families the imprisonment of a family member benefits that family, for many partners, children, and parents of prisoners the prison sentence brings with it many challenges, and consequences which are often negative. Whilst for many years the impact of imprisonment was under-researched, there is now a substantial body of published research literature from around the world, although there are still some significant gaps. This chapter will draw on the extensive recent research on the impacts of imprisonment on families, outlining the social, financial, and other consequences of a family member serving a prison sentence. The chapter will explore the specific needs and experiences of the children of imprisoned parents, including mothers, and will identify and discuss examples of good practice in working with prisoners’ families, which are likely to be highly relevant to criminal justice practitioners and policymakers.
