ABSTRACT

This is a slightly opinionated review of three main factions in metaontology: Quineans, Carnapians, and Meinongians. Coverage of the first faction includes Quine, van Inwagen, and Sider; coverage of the second includes Carnap, Thomasson, and Hofweber; coverage of the third includes Meinong, Priest, Berto, Zalta, and Crane. (More space is devoted to Meinongians, as the metaontological aspect of Meinongianism has been underappreciated.) Particular attention is devoted to how quantification is interpreted by different philosophers. The final section then offers some pragmatist remarks about the legitimacy of ontology, touching on ideas I have developed in other publications.
