ABSTRACT
This chapter begins with an introduction to the Active Shooter/Hostile Event (ASHE) threat. It explores a wide subject matter pertaining to this threat to educate the reader regarding the evolution of this threat, as well as teaching the reader how to increase their chances of survival during an ASHE. Although it is very difficult to profile an active shooter/attacker, it is possible to educate professionals regarding some of the common themes that have been recorded following the study of the horrific incidents. Plenty of data also shines light on many of the commonalities of active shooter incidents worldwide. The chapter describes the evolution of the ASHE threat, with particular attention being paid to the commonalities of incidents, prevention and recognition, profiles of shooters, and physical indicators. Police officers use situational awareness to prevent themselves from putting themselves in bad situations that may lead them to becoming overcome by events. The Vigilance Mindset is a mindset of confidence and situational awareness.
