ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an experiential activity, which is designed for master’s-level counselor education students but could be adapted for children or adolescents in schools. The students are divided into four groups. The activity is a lead-in to learning about social justice by connecting the concept of privilege to having access to physical and social resources and oppression as a lack of access to needed resources. The chapter lists the learning objectives, the materials needed and the instructions for conducting the activity. It also lists the supplies needed for each group. After the activity, the groups are brought together for processing and to express their feelings and what they noticed throughout their activities. The learning objectives are: understanding privilege as having access to more resources (physical and through assistance); understanding oppression as having less access and support; and connecting social justice to concepts of privilege and oppression.
