ABSTRACT

Challenging novice counselors to identify incidents of injustice that are observed in their day-to-day lives. Further challenging students to acknowledge their own areas of privilege and how they may advocate for marginalized groups. Students are allowed two to three weeks between identifying an observation and completing the assignment. The activity is designed for a classroom over the course of a semester. It is intended that once a student has personally observed a social injustice, they post/write about the event via Blackboard. The students can debrief in three separate ways. First, students are encouraged to seek out their academic advisors if needed to discuss an event/situation related to this activity that could create stress or discomfort for them. Second, students are encouraged to discuss the noted event(s)/situation(s) on Blackboard. Finally, students are provided time in the classroom to discuss postings, events, and situations about which they remain unclear, concerned, or in some way distressed.
